Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges

Inter Arma Enim Silent Leges - that’s Latin for “In times of war, the law falls silent”. A quote by Cicero that essentially means “Caesar can do no wrong!”. That’s also the name of an episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Every time I see that episode now I can’t help but think about how prophetic it was. Less than three years after it first aired that “drama” unfolded for real, almost specifically, in our government! All the way down to the one man you thought you could trust - Colin Powell - being the person who manipulates and betrays you.

Finally remembering to do a google search this time I found this old blog. Almost everything else listed in the search related to the DS9 episode. Are that blogger and me the only two people to make this comparison?! Albeit his isn’t inspired by an episode of Trek. He was far more succinct than me too. But lines like “Another flaw in this belief is the assumption that the excess of power now being excercised by the state (apparently to continue indefinitely) will never be abused. Authorities will never intentionally use these powers to harass, to carry out vendettas, or to attack personal or political enemies, we presume.” make it obvious that this blog is almost three years old! We’ve seen things like undercover CIA agent’s identities be released in petty attempts at revenge since then.

I really don’t know what else to say now. It sickens me to see people that so vehemently proclaim themselves as “patriots” and “americans” be the ones to steal our rights and destroy everything that america is supposed to stand for.

If you’ve never read 1984, or haven’t read it recently, it’s all online.
